Abstract:AIM:To discuss the use and application of ultrasound biomicroscopy(UBM)in the diagnosis of no-metallic foreign body in sclera.
METHODS: Retrospective study of 15 patients who were diagnosed as scleral no-metallic foreign bodies. Their symptoms were repeated red-eye and eye-pain. All of them were in no-acute period. UBM were used to diagnose suspicious sclera foreign bodies, and were confirmed as no-metallic foreign bodies by surgical operation.
RESULTS: Medical history of 10 cases confirmed definitely botanical ocular trauma. Medical history of 5 cases was unidentified. Course of disease was 1-6 months. Clinical manifestations were repeatedly red-eye and eye-pain, which could be improved by medical treatment, but appeared once again after ceased medication. All patients presented with local rise in sclera, and lightly or heavy hyperemia without cornea edema. Ultrasound imaging was high-density imaging with the later tissue no imaging. Suspicious scleral foreign bodies were diagnosed. After operation, 11 cases were planted foreign bodies, 2 cases were coal cinder, 1 case was glass bits, 1 case was small stone.
CONCLUSION: UBM could find scleral no-metallic foreign bodies without delay, decrease.
